By now, many of you have probably seen this video making its way across the Internet. It’s unbelievable in that five minutes of cell phone video show a tornado reaching ground and becoming an absolute monster that would end up destroying a large portion of Moore, Oklahoma.
Part of me is mesmerized by watching the tornado form and watching the phenomenon happen, but most of me is horrified by seeing the debris flying through the air and knowing people’s lives are being uprooted before their very eyes.
The video was shot by Charles Cook, who took the video on a cell phone as he sat in a parking lot in his car in Newcastle, Oklahoma. The twister reaches the ground and widens nearly a minute and a half in, and increases in intensity with absolutely frightening speed.
Of all the videos shot of a tornado in the past, including those shot by storm chasers, I consider this the most frightening tornado video I’ve seen. I have never seen a tornado gain in intensity that quickly and destroy so much so quickly. I know the 2011 Joplin tornado was bad as well, but I have not seen as clear a video of that one.
My thoughts and prayers have been with the people in Moore and for the families of those who have lost their lives in this disaster. I pray for God’s peace and comfort, and I commend those who are on the ground helping those who have lost everything at this time.
Also let’s not forget the people in Shawnee, Okla., and points in Texas that lost their homes and lives as well in recent storms. Prayers go out for them too.
